Ucluelet really is a magical place. Surrounded by the most awe-inspiring, vast waters, it’s easy to get lost in the beauty here.
The name “Ucluelet” comes from the Nootka language and means, “People of the Safe Harbor.” In its name and in its essence, Ucluelet is closely tied to the water.
Simply put, halibut are big fish. With many topping thirty pounds, halibut fishing requires rods & reels that can handle some heavy action. For halibut fishing, we use the Shimano Trevala halibut fishing rod TVC-H 6’6”. This super slim halibut fishing rod has superior sensitivity and can handle heavy action. It has a 80-200# line rating. We also use Fenwick halibut fishing rods, which like the Shimano have superior quality, outstanding sensitivity, and the ability to support heavy action.
Along with these top-notch halibut fishing rods, we need superior halibut fishing reels. We use Avet LX6/3 two-speed halibut fishing reels. The Avet LX6/3 two-speed reels have a lever drag control system with a pre-set drag feature. They’re 100% machined, type two anodized, and have a true one-piece aluminum frame. The reels have the largest line capacity in their class and offer superior control over large fish.
For salmon fishing, we use 10.5 foot Shimano Technium rods. For many guides and lodges on the west coast, this rod ranks number one. It’s crafted for medium to heavy action and it’s perfect for fishing on downriggers. With ceramic eyelets for non-abrasive resistance toward the line, the Shimano Technium Rod has superior durability.
We use Islander MR2 mooching reels for salmon angling. The Islander MR2 mooching reel is a single action, direct drive reel. Its spool lever allows you to completely disengage the drag, and its spool side drag adjustment knob is buttery smooth and infinitely adjustable. Its light wear resistant engineering plastic does not absorb water. As a result, the reel can withstand just about any environment. We load our Islander reels with 50# braided backing and 40# test Maxima Ultra green monofilament line
Tackle and lures are one of the most important elements to a successful fishing trip. We use superior quality halibut fishing tackle and salmon fishing lures on every one of our fishing charters.
For halibut fishing tackle, due to its superior results, our guides use a slider weight system rather than a standard spreader bar system. We use two-pound lead weights with a three-foot lead to the bait or jigs. We also use Berkley Power grubs, Mudraker jigs, and Norwegian jigs as artificial jigs.
For salmon fishing lures, we use Tomic salmon plugs and salmon spoons. Tomic makes all of their salmon lures with exceptional attention to detail. Each salmon lure is crafted with the best materials available, is built with precise specifications, and is hand painted.
Our fishing guides are experts on salmon and halibut fishing. Therefore, they choose only the most appropriate salmon and halibut fishing bait for all of our fishing charters.
Because halibut stay in relatively deep waters where there is little no visibility, they rely almost completely on scent. In fact, halibut have been known to travel several miles while tracking a scent. Therefore, it’s important to we use bait that is fragrant, such as herring, octopus, salmon bellies, and salmon heads.
For salmon bait, we use anchovies and herring fished in a variety of teaser heads, which help the bait perform properly. For bucktailing, a technique used to catch feeding Coho salmon that is very popular in Barkley Sound in late August and September, we use natural polar bear inside streamers in a variety of colours.
Part of the benefit of fishing on a fishing charter is the opportunity to be out on the open waters with a world-class fishing guide. Our guides are known individually for their talent, energy, and encyclopedic knowledge of all things halibut fishing and salmon fishing. Each fishing guide at Ukee Sports Fishing is in a class of his own, and our guests treasure their time on the water with them.
Each of our fishing guides are rugged, eagle-eyed fisherman who live, eat, and breathe sport fishing. They’re dedicated to sharing their knowledge and experience with all of our guests, and to making sure that each guest has the best experience possible aboard our ships. Through sharing amazing folkloric experiences with the wildlife in and around the waters of Ucluelet to sharing facts and fishing tips along the way, our guides impart invaluable insight and extraordinary experiences to our guests.
